Arkansas Boating Fatalities Hit 16 Year High In 2025 With 17 Deaths

Arkansas saw a sharp increase in boating fatalities and accidents in 2025, according to a new report from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Officials say 17 people died in boating incidents last year, marking the highest number since 2009. Boating accidents also climbed to 73 statewide, the most reported since 2020.

Authorities point to hazardous water conditions caused by heavy rains and flooding, along with an increase in duck hunting-related boating activity, as major factors. Reports show 11 boating accidents involved duck hunters in 2025, up from 5 in 2024.

Investigators say operator inexperience and unfamiliar conditions also played a role, including incidents involving rented boats. Even experienced boaters struggled with strong currents and dangerous waterways.

Safety officials emphasize that life jacket use remains critically low. Only 33 percent of boaters involved in accidents were wearing life jackets, and just 1 of the 17 fatal victims had one on at the time.

Officials urge all boaters to respect water conditions, slow down, and always wear a life jacket while on Arkansas waterways.
