Lyon College is inviting students, faculty, and the community to honor the legacy of Fred Rogers with a meaningful day of service in Batesville.

The college will observe Mr. Rogers Day on March 19, 2026, during Chapel Hour with a community service project at Pioneer Cemetery, focusing on preserving local history and honoring those who came before.

Lyon College Chaplain and Director of Service Maggie Alsup said the event reflects the values made famous by Rogers through Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, including kindness, compassion, and being a good neighbor.

Rogers’ birthday, March 20, is widely recognized as a time for communities to reflect on his teachings and put them into action through service projects.

During the event, participants will partner with BillionGraves, a global database dedicated to preserving burial records. Volunteers will photograph headstones, upload images, and record information to help genealogists, historians, and families access valuable historical data.

Organizers say the project not only preserves history but also strengthens community connections.

“The month of March has become a time for the church to highlight all we learned from Mr. Rogers’ work,” Alsup said. “It is also a time for us to put into action the things he taught for many years.”

The service project will begin at 12:15 p.m. and conclude in time for students to return to afternoon classes.
