The Lyon College Department of Nursing will host its first-ever Clinical Skills Expo on Monday, Jan. 26, offering hands-on training for current nursing students while introducing area high school students to careers in healthcare.

The expo will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Scottish Heritage Building on the Lyon College campus at 2300 Highland Rd. Approximately 60 high school students will attend alongside Lyon College nursing students.

Participants will rotate through multiple clinical skills stations, practicing vital signs, head-to-toe assessments, patient intake, urinalysis, CPR, choking response, hand hygiene, bloodborne pathogen safety, and proper use of personal protective equipment, including donning and doffing sterile gloves. Students will also gain introductory experience with blood draws and interpreting basic blood values.

The expo will also emphasize professional nursing standards, including HIPAA compliance, ethical responsibilities outlined by the American Nurses Association, cultural and spiritual competence, service learning, and professional conduct.

“The Clinical Skills Expo allows our nursing students to build confidence and competence before entering clinical settings,” said Dr. Rebecca Le, director of nursing education at Lyon College. “It also gives high school students an authentic look at what nursing education involves.”

College officials say the event reflects Lyon College’s commitment to experiential learning and strengthening the future healthcare workforce in the region.
