Russell D. “Russ” Harrington Jr., former president and CEO of Baptist Health and a longtime leader in Arkansas healthcare, has passed away at the age of 81. Baptist Health confirmed Harrington’s passing in a statement shared on social media, noting he died on December 14.

Harrington led Baptist Health for three decades, serving as president and CEO from 1984 to 2014. During his tenure, he transformed Baptist Health into the integrated healthcare system it is today, expanding services while maintaining a faith-based mission focused on compassionate, patient-centered care.
In its statement, Baptist Health described Harrington as a visionary leader whose “management by walking around” approach and servant leadership left a lasting impact on employees and the communities the organization serves. Prior to becoming CEO, Harrington served as associate executive director of Baptist Health and as an administrator at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.
In 2014, the Baptist Health Board of Directors honored Harrington’s 40 years of service by renaming the Little Rock hospital campus the Russell D. Harrington, Jr. Campus. The dedication included new campus signage and a commemorative keepsake book presented to Harrington, recognizing donations from more than 325 employees, friends, and family members. Harrington was involved in the opening of a new medical center in Heber Springs in 2007, and the decision to build a hospital in Conway.
At the time of his retirement, Harrington said it had been an honor to serve the healthcare needs of Arkansas and work alongside skilled physicians, caregivers, and staff. He continued his service to the organization as president emeritus and senior advisor.
Baptist Health extended its heartfelt condolences to Harrington’s wife, Donna, and the entire Harrington family, honoring his legacy as a faithful servant, compassionate leader, and trusted friend to many across the state.
