A “blanket ban” in Searcy, Arkansas, is currently under consideration…
The results could accidentally damage property values in the city. Especially properties that rely on natural beauty with historic ties.
The city of Searcy, Arkansas had a city council discussing whether Searcy homeowners should be required to REMOVE ALL bamboo plants at their homes completely (unless they are potted). Under one plan, if homeowners refuse, they could be forced to pay massive fines and watch their homes’ landscaping forcibly destroyed with no replacement in sight.
There are alternatives. Only time will tell if they are taken.
Homes With Historic Bamboo Patches Could Face Destruction
It’s not just about a plant. It’s about landscapes involving homes that have had bamboo as part of their longstanding history.
One such home, linked to architect Faye Jones, is surrounded by thickets of bamboo that have been maintained for decades.
Under such a blanket ban, the entire character of the real estate will be destroyed for no good reason.
All because a small minority of people don’t maintain their property correctly. It has horrifying implications.
Why The City’s Sudden Concern About Bamboo Trees?
The ban was discussed after a certain Searcy council member helped physically remove an overgrowth of bamboo recently.
Because the yardwork was so difficult, he proposed banning it altogether.
Home Values Could Be Impacted
The news comes after Beebe, Arkansas ordered a blanket ban a few months ago requiring homeowners to destroy the plants in 60 days or pay massive fines.
However, no replacement plans for the greenery or tall trees are known. This means some of the most beautiful real estate in Searcy, Arkansas could find itself stripped of its natural beauty with no long-term plan for replacement.
Even worse, if the ban is followed as Beebe did, maintenance and clean bamboo won’t matter. You’ll have to remove it all. Or else you’re in trouble!
Thankfully, Mayor Matt Faulkner expressed caution at such a plan. He is requesting that research be performed before any sudden drastic decisions are made.
Potential Alternatives
It would be different to ban bamboo that is growing across property lines.
But banning it altogether could prove a drastic option that has unintended consequences that could hurt the community as a whole.
