A swift, community-wide effort kept a potentially dangerous blaze from endangering Waldron on September 23.
On September 23, six grass fires ignited along City Lake Road near Waldron, Arkansas, and were extinguished within an hour by the Waldron City and Rural Fire Departments with assistance from the Sheriff’s Office, police, and other volunteers. The coordinated attack from both east and west sides prevented injuries and limited spread despite dry conditions. Authorities noted the cause remains unknown but emphasized continued fire safety.
Grass Fires Along City Lake Road Quickly Extinguished
At 3:30 p.m. on September 23, the Waldron City Fire Department was dispatched to multiple grass fires along City Lake Road, stretching from two miles east of Main Street to near City Lake. The call was made to assist the Waldron Rural Fire Department. This response was reported by the Waldron City Fire Department.
Heavy traffic and ongoing road construction forced some crew members to use East Highway 248 and Rebecca’s Road to reach the blaze. Both the city and rural fire departments attacked the fire from the east and west sides. Their coordinated effort helped contain the flames.
Six separate grass fires were identified along the side of City Lake Road. All fires were fully extinguished within an hour, though two experienced moderate spread. No injuries were reported.
The official cause of the fires remains unknown, though possibilities include a dragging chain from a trailer or an exhaust backfire. The Sheriff’s Office, Arkansas Forestry Commission, Waldron Police Department, and local homeowners were thanked for their assistance. Officials reminded the public that dry conditions persist and to follow the burn ban.
