Beebe resident and retired United States Air Force veteran Michael W. Westergren has been elected to a national leadership position with The American Legion.
Westergren was elected national vice commander during The American Legion’s 107th National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, on September 3, 2026.
He is 1 of 5 national vice commanders elected to help lead the veterans organization.
Westergren graduated from Kentridge High School in Kent, Washington, in 1977 and joined the Air Force shortly afterward.
During his military career, Westergren earned multiple Air Force Commendation Medals and the Meritorious Service Medal.
He served as a heavy-airlift maintenance technician on C-141 and C-130 aircraft and later worked as a quality control inspector.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Westergren earned a bachelor of science in education from Arkansas State University and taught mathematics at Carlisle High School.
Westergren has been a charter member of American Legion Post 91 in Beebe since 2005. He has served in numerous leadership positions, including local post commander, Arkansas department commander and National Executive Committee member.
He served as department commander of the Arkansas American Legion from 2017 to 2018.
Westergren has also served on several state and national committees. His service included a 7-year term as national chairman of the Committee on Youth Education.
He remains active with the Sons of The American Legion and The American Legion Riders at Post 91 in Beebe.
Westergren has participated in the American Legion Legacy Run since 2019, riding either his Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail or Road Glide.
While serving on the Committee on Youth Education, Westergren coordinated with schools located along the Legacy Run route to help young people understand the event’s purpose and significance.
His hobbies include fishing, woodworking, riding motorcycles and working on motorcycles.
Westergren and his wife, Carol, have been married since 2005. They enjoy traveling, attending American Legion events and spending time with their grandchildren.
Westergren’s election places the Beebe resident among the national leadership of an organization representing veterans and their interests across the United States.
