Mountain View High School junior Erin Akins established a new school record in the girls 5,000-meter cross-country event Tuesday evening in Heber Springs.
Akins completed the race in 19 minutes, 37.81 seconds during the Josh Park Memorial Cross-Country Meet on September 15.
Her time surpassed the previous Mountain View school record of 19 minutes, 51.20 seconds held by former Mountain View athlete Emma Akins.
Erin Akins lowered the school record by 13.39 seconds.
The Mountain View Booster Club announced the record-breaking performance Tuesday night and congratulated Akins on the accomplishment.

A MULTI-SPORT ATHLETE
In addition to competing in cross-country, Akins is a member of the Mountain View girls basketball program.
The Class of 2028 athlete has also received recognition for her accomplishments on the basketball court.
During her freshman season, Akins made 112 3-point field goals while shooting 46.4% from behind the arc, according to Prep Girls Hoops.
She also made 6 3-pointers during a state tournament game, placing her among Arkansas’ recognized girls basketball record holders.
Her record-setting cross-country performance adds another accomplishment to her Mountain View athletic career.
The 5K is the standard high school cross-country racing distance for senior high athletes. Courses can include grass, hills, trails and other natural terrain, making finishing times dependent on both course and weather conditions.
