Firefighters responded to an early morning fire at the former Grays Hospital building on Main Street in Batesville Arkansas.

According to the Batesville Fire Department, crews were dispatched at approximately 3:06 AM after reports of a possible structure fire.

Engine 1 arrived on scene and reported visible smoke coming from the abandoned structure. Fire crews immediately entered the building to conduct both a victim search and fire suppression operation.
Officials confirmed:
No occupants were found inside
The fire was quickly located and extinguished

Investigators say it appears that piles of trash inside the building had been set on fire, raising concerns that the incident may be intentional.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

6 full-time firefighters (4 on duty)
3 volunteer firefighters
responded to the large structure fire.
Officials noted that minimum staffing for a building of this size should have been more than 20 firefighters, highlighting challenges faced during the response.
