White River Health of Arkansas is continuing negotiations with UnitedHealthcare ahead of a March 31, 2026 deadline that could impact healthcare access for patients across Arkansas.

Hospital officials say a final offer has been submitted, but if no agreement is reached, White River Health will move out-of-network for UnitedHealthcare commercial and Medicare Advantage plans.
Leaders at White River Health say the dispute centers on what they describe as unfair reimbursement rates and administrative delays that can slow patient care. The hospital says it is seeking fair rates comparable to other providers and fewer barriers for patients.
If the contract expires, patients could face higher out-of-pocket costs, including increased deductibles and co-pays, and some services may no longer be considered in-network.
Officials warn the impact could be felt statewide, especially for patients requiring ongoing treatments such as radiation therapy, which often requires daily visits over several weeks.
However, White River Health emphasizes that some patients will NOT be impacted, including those with Arkansas state retiree or teacher coverage, VA coverage, TriCare, or certain retiree Medicare Advantage plans.
Patients with emergencies will continue to receive care at in-network rates regardless of contract status.
Mayor Rick Elumbaugh says the uncertainty could affect both healthcare outcomes and local economies, as patients may delay treatment or travel farther for care.
White River Health is urging Medicare Advantage patients to review their coverage before the March 31 open enrollment deadline. Patients can switch plans or return to traditional Medicare, with new coverage typically beginning the first day of the following month.
The hospital confirms it will remain in-network in 2026 with several plans, including Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield, HealthSpring (Cigna), Wellcare, and others.
Patients who are pregnant or managing chronic conditions may request “Continuity of Care” through UnitedHealthcare, which could allow continued treatment after March 31 if approved. Requests must be submitted by April 30, 2026.

UnitedHealthcare says it is negotiating in good faith and hopes to reach an agreement that balances affordability with continued access for Arkansas patients.
Officials on both sides say they remain hopeful a deal can be reached before the deadline to avoid disruptions.
