The student literary and art magazine Uncharted at Arkansas State University–Beebe has received the highest distinction in the national Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines contest.

The publication was named a REALM First Class magazine by the National Council of Teachers of English, which sponsors the REALM program to honor outstanding student-produced literary magazines. The contest recognizes excellence in writing, editing, design, and artistic expression.

For the 2025 contest cycle, 456 student magazines were nominated from 44 states, Washington, D.C., and six countries, spanning middle school, high school, and higher education publications. Only 135 magazines earned the top REALM First Class honor.

“Uncharted is the only college publication in the state of Arkansas to get the highest rank,” said Dr. Jodi Whitehurst, associate professor of English at ASU–Beebe. She said the recognition reflects the strong talent and dedication of the college’s student writers and artists.

The REALM program is designed to encourage schools to develop and support literary magazines that celebrate the craft of writing and visual art. Eligible participants include schools across all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada, and American schools abroad.

Founded in 1927, ASU–Beebe is a two-year institution within the Arkansas State University System, offering associate degrees, certificates, and workforce training across multiple campuses and online.
