As winter weather moves into the state, the Arkansas State Police are urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for hazardous driving conditions caused by freezing rain, snow, and bitter cold temperatures.

Troopers say staying off the roads when conditions deteriorate helps reduce crashes, protects first responders, and keeps highways clear for road crews working to improve safety.
For drivers who must travel, the Arkansas State Police recommend using extra caution by reducing speed, avoiding sudden steering or braking, and increasing following distance between vehicles. Motorists are also advised to begin slowing down much earlier than normal when approaching intersections, bridges, and exit ramps, which tend to freeze first.
Drivers are encouraged to prepare an emergency kit before traveling. Recommended items include extra clothing, blankets, water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a phone charger, an ice scraper, and basic first-aid supplies. Officials also advise keeping fuel tanks at least half full and ensuring tires are properly inflated to improve traction and reliability.
Troopers will be positioned across the state to assist motorists in need. For non-emergency assistance or to report a roadway hazard, drivers may dial *ASP (*277) to be connected to the nearest Arkansas State Police Troop headquarters. The service is available on major cellular carriers operating in Arkansas and should only be used for non-emergency situations. Emergencies should continue to be reported by calling 9-1-1.
For the latest winter road conditions, motorists can visit IDrive Arkansas and view the Winter Weather Road Conditions Map. Travelers are encouraged to monitor local forecasts closely and delay or cancel trips when conditions become hazardous.
