Lyon College will spotlight the work of its newest scholars as first-year students present their research and creative projects during the annual Humanities, Arts, Technology and Science (HATS) symposium on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will be held inside the Derby Center for Science and Mathematics, located at 2300 Highland Rd. on the Lyon College campus.

The poster sessions will take place across the first and lower levels of Derby, where students enrolled in COR 100: Year One courses will showcase projects developed throughout the fall semester. Faculty, staff, students, and community members are invited to attend, engage with presenters, and support Lyon College’s first-year learners. Light snacks will be available.
HATS serves as the opening bookend to the campus-wide Student Creative Arts and Research Forum (SCARF), held each spring for upperclassmen to share advanced academic and creative work. Together, these events highlight Lyon College’s commitment to hands-on, inquiry-driven education across disciplines.
Dr. Robert Miller, assistant professor of psychology and director of the Year One program, said the event reflects the college’s dedication to fostering curiosity and academic exploration from a student’s very first semester.
“Each year, I look forward to checking out what our first-year students have learned and accomplished during their first semester at Lyon,” Dr. Miller said. “I hear that this year’s groups have been involved in all sorts of great activities in their COR 100 classes, and I can’t wait to talk with students this year about their experiences.”
The event is free and open to the public.
