The 31st Annual Lyon College Service Day on October 22 brought together hundreds of students, faculty, and staff to make a meaningful impact across Batesville and Independence County, setting a new record for volunteer hours.

This year, 429 students joined 43 faculty and staff members, contributing a total of 1,354.5 hours of service in a single day. Volunteers participated in a variety of projects, including outdoor cleanups, assembling pantry supplies, and supporting local animal care facilities, working closely with area nonprofits, schools, and community organizations.

Before volunteers departed for their assignments, Batesville Mayor Rick Elumbaugh, Lyon College Student Government Association President Zoe Papazoglou, and Lyon College President Dr. Melissa Taverner offered words of encouragement and gratitude, highlighting the importance of giving back to the community.

Rev. Maggie Alsup, Lyon College chaplain and director of service who coordinates Service Day, emphasized that the impact extends far beyond the hours logged.

“Service Day is a living expression of who we are as a campus community,” Rev. Alsup said. “Our students show up with compassion, energy, and willingness to help wherever they’re needed. The fact that we set a new record this year speaks to their commitment to making a real difference right here at home.”

Service Day is a longstanding tradition at Lyon College, emphasizing service learning, community partnerships, and the college’s mission to foster responsible citizenship. Coordinated by the Office of the Chaplain, the event relies on collaboration between campus leadership, students, and local organizations.

For many Batesville-area nonprofits, Service Day is more than just a single day of volunteering—it provides students with lasting connections and a chance to continue supporting the community year-round.
