Tragically, their patrol vehicle collided with another car on Hwy 64E near Conway. The crash sent their vehicle off the road, striking a concrete structure and a tree before landing upside down.
The patrol car sustained severe damage, leaking fluids and posing a fire risk. A ruptured gas main nearby heightened the danger at the scene.
Despite his own injuries, Recruit Deputy Matthews focused on rescuing his partially unresponsive partner. He cut his own seatbelt, crawled out, and freed Deputy McLain from the wreckage.
Matthews dragged his partner to safety, ensuring emergency responders could treat them.
Both deputies are now stable and expected to recover fully.
