It’s happening all across the nation. It’s also happening at Searcy, Arkansas.
A recent article by a student at Harding University’s local newspaper “The Case Against Social Media” suggests that students are turning away from social media. It’s a new campaign by young people to get back to their roots.
Students In Searcy, Arkansas Are Rejecting Big Tech
The student author says it all started when they (including a friend) decided to delete their social media accounts:
“My friend Randi and I deleted our Instagram accounts last September. After one year without it, I’ve done a lot of reflection, and I’ve come to a few conclusions about social media.”
The student says the move has led to the following outcomes:
- Stabilized confidence.
- Friendships are still strong.
- Not as prideful or concerned about comparing situations with others.
- More productivity.
It’s not just one or two students doing this at Harding. Other students across Searcy are doing the exact same thing.
A Nationwide Phenomenon
Social media usage is dropping among young people. It’s not focused at young people like it used to be.
Statistics show as of this year, social media usage by teens has dropped by almost half!
American teens are less inclined to use X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook now than they were ten years ago. While 71% of youth used Facebook in 2014-2015, only 33% do today.
According to reports, 34% of Generation Z members have declared they’re permanently leaving social media, while 64% are currently stepping away from it temporarily.
