As Winter Storm Hits Arkansas, Fire Marshal Urges Safety During Community Risk Reduction Week

As a winter storm brings cold temperatures and increased home heating across Arkansas, the Arkansas State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents to use extra caution while recognizing Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Week, observed January 17–26, 2026.

Officials say winter weather often leads to increased use of space heaters, fireplaces, extension cords, and generators — all of which can significantly raise the risk of house fires if not used properly. In 2025, Arkansas recorded more than 60 fire-related deaths, highlighting the importance of prevention and preparedness.

“Every one of those fatalities is a solemn reminder that prevention saves lives,” said Arkansas Fire Marshal Dennis Free. “When temperatures drop and people rely more heavily on heating devices, taking simple safety steps can prevent tragedy.”

The State Fire Marshal’s Office encourages residents to take the following winter safety precautions:

• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can burn and never leave them unattended.
• Avoid plugging heaters into extension cords or overloaded outlets.
• Make sure smoke alarms are installed on every level of the home and test them regularly.
• Keep fireplaces clean and use proper screens to prevent sparks.
• Never leave cooking unattended while staying indoors during cold weather.
• Create and practice a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room.

Community Risk Reduction Week focuses on improving safety through education, engineering, enforcement, emergency response, and evaluation — helping communities identify risks before emergencies occur.

Officials urge Arkansans to review safety plans, check heating equipment, and talk with family members about fire prevention during the winter storm and throughout the season.
