Arkansas State Police Cold Case Unit agents and Pine Bluff Police have made an arrest in connection with the 1992 homicide of a newborn baby boy.
According to an Arkansas State Police news release, 52-year-old Stephanie Amos of Jacksonville was arrested Monday, September 14, on a warrant charging her with 1 count of Capital Murder.
Authorities say Amos was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Jefferson County Detention Center, where she was ordered held without bond.
The case dates back more than 34 years.
On June 22, 1992, the body of a newborn male infant was discovered in a ditch in the 1000 block of South Mulberry Street in Pine Bluff.
Pine Bluff Police opened an investigation at the time.
An autopsy conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office at the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory determined the infant died from craniocerebral trauma. The death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation later stalled.
In early October 2025, Pine Bluff Police requested assistance from the Arkansas State Police Cold Case Unit.
Later that month, the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory notified ASP investigators that a DNA sample obtained from the infant had been analyzed and entered into the Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS.
According to State Police, the infant’s DNA profile generated a hit to Amos, who authorities identified as a former Pine Bluff resident.
ASP says Amos’ DNA was already contained in CODIS as a result of prior felony arrests and convictions.
Arkansas State Police agents and Pine Bluff Police investigators then continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
Investigators submitted the case file to the 11th West Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on June 17, 2026.
On July 29, prosecutors advised the Arkansas State Police Cold Case Unit that Amos would be charged with Capital Murder, and an arrest warrant was issued.
That warrant was served Monday, September 14.
Amos is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Detention Center.
The charge is an allegation. Amos is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
