An Arkansas man faces multiple charges following a high-speed pursuit and crash that seriously injured two bystanders on Interstate 555 near Trumann.
According to Arkansas State Police, the incident began at approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, when a trooper attempted to stop a Hyundai Sonata traveling northbound near the 24-mile marker for an alleged traffic violation.
Police identified the driver as 32-year-old Laloyd L. Hamilton III.
ASP reported that Hamilton failed to stop and accelerated to approximately 130 mph, initiating a pursuit along the interstate.
As the pursuit approached the 28-mile marker, the trooper performed a Tactical Vehicle Intervention, commonly called a TVI. The suspect’s vehicle then collided with a third-party vehicle, causing that vehicle to overturn on the east side of I-555.
A 68-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man occupying the third-party vehicle were seriously injured. Both were transported to Regional One Medical Center in Memphis for treatment. Their names and current conditions were not released.
Hamilton was transported to NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro for evaluation following the crash.
According to ASP, a search of the suspect’s vehicle resulted in the recovery of suspected narcotics, including illegal marijuana, pills and an unidentified liquid substance.
Hamilton was later booked into the Poinsett County Detention Center. He faces charges of felony fleeing, second-degree battery, criminal mischief, possession with purpose to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, hazardous driving and driving while intoxicated.
The investigation remains ongoing, and Arkansas State Police said no additional information is being released at this time.
The charges are allegations. Hamilton is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
