Authorities have identified a man who drowned Saturday evening at Newport Lake in Newport.
According to the Newport Police Department, 52-year-old Dewayne Dates of Beebe was recovered from the water after falling into the lake at Lockwood Park around 7:41 p.m.
Officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of a man entering the water. Police say responding officers entered the lake in an attempt to locate Dates but were unable to find him.
The Independence County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team was then called to assist in the search and recovery operation.
The dive team later located Dates in the lake. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say no foul play is suspected at this time, and the incident remains under investigation.
The drowning occurred at Lockwood Park, a public recreation area in Newport, where emergency responders worked into the evening during the recovery effort.
