A trustee at the Lonoke County Detention Center is facing multiple charges after authorities say he attempted to escape from jail grounds on 3-2-2026.

According to the Lonoke County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Gross was assigned to a work detail outside the secure portion of the facility when he reportedly walked away Monday.

The incident prompted an immediate response from Lonoke County deputies, the Tucker K-9 Unit and the Lonoke Police Department. Authorities established a perimeter and began searching the surrounding area.

With assistance from local citizens, Gross was located in a wooded area near Catfish Road and taken into custody without incident.

Gross is now charged with 1 count of escape in the 3rd degree, a Class C felony, along with resisting arrest and interfering with vital facilities, both Class A misdemeanors. Officials say additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.

John Staley thanked law enforcement officers and community members for their swift response.

“I want to thank deputies, the Tucker K-9 Unit, the Lonoke Police Department and the citizens who immediately reported what they saw,” Staley said. “Because of their quick response and teamwork, this situation was resolved safely and efficiently.”

Authorities confirmed the situation was handled safely and no injuries were reported.
