The Arkansas250 Commission and the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism (ADPHT) have opened a new exhibit at the Old State House Museum in Little Rock to commemorate America’s semiquincentennial, the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.

The exhibit, titled “Before Us, Beyond Us,” officially opened to the public on 3-4-2026 and explores Arkansas history from its Indigenous roots through Territorial days and into modern times.
Organizers say the exhibit also highlights Arkansas’ influence on national history and the state’s role in shaping the American story.
“This exhibit is unique because our Heritage museums worked together to create it,” said ADPHT Secretary Shea Lewis. “Our team of curators chose compelling items from across their collections as well as from Arkansas State Parks, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, and other partners to help tell Arkansas’ incredible history.”
Lewis said the exhibit also showcases how ADPHT continues promoting Arkansas’ natural resources and expanding tourism opportunities throughout the state.
In 2024, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders created the Arkansas250 Commission and appointed 14 Arkansans from across the state to help lead the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
The commission’s mission is to highlight the history, culture, and natural beauty of the Natural State while inspiring Arkansans to protect and celebrate their shared heritage.
Several initiatives are already underway, including:
• A statewide historical marker initiative
• The Arkansas250 commemorative flag initiative
• A commissioned Arkansas250 painting, which will be unveiled as part of the exhibit
The exhibit is free to attend and will remain open through 12-2026.
The Old State House Museum is open:
• Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Arkansas Heritage, established in 1975, operates as a division of the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage and Tourism and includes 8 agencies focused on preserving Arkansas culture and history, including the Arkansas Arts Council, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, Arkansas State Archives, and several museums across the state.
