The music world is remembering legendary songwriter Billy Steinberg, who has died at the age of 74.

Steinberg, inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011, helped define 1980s pop and rock with a string of enduring hits — many written alongside longtime collaborator Tom Kelly.
Among his most iconic works was “Like a Virgin,” made famous by Madonna, along with “True Colors” for Cyndi Lauper and “Alone” by Heart. (Heart in Concert February 25th in North Little Rock) The duo also penned “Eternal Flame” for The Bangles and “I Drove All Night,” recorded by Roy Orbison and later Lauper.
Steinberg’s work with Pat Benatar included “Precious Time,” “Sex as a Weapon,” and “I Want Out,” while he also co-wrote “I Don’t Want to Lose You” and “Over the Edge” for REO Speedwagon.
From power ballads to pop anthems, Steinberg’s lyrics captured emotion, resilience, and vulnerability — shaping a generation of chart-topping music.
