The Arkansas State Highway Commission has announced that applications are now available for the 2026 Arkansas Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and the Arkansas Recreational Trails Program (RTP).

Administered by The Arkansas Department of Transportation, TAP and RTP provide federal grant funding to local public agencies for eligible transportation and recreational trail projects. Both programs operate on a reimbursable basis and do not fund traditional highway improvements.

Eligible TAP projects include pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure such as sidewalks, trails, crossings, lighting, Safe Routes to School projects, abandoned railroad corridor conversions, traffic calming measures, and non-infrastructure efforts like public awareness campaigns, education programs, and pedestrian or trail master plans.

Eligible RTP projects include the improvement, development, and rehabilitation of motorized and non-motorized trails, as well as trailhead facilities and trail linkages.

Virtual informational seminars will be held Thursday, February 12, 2026, and Tuesday, February 24, 2026, to review program requirements and responsibilities.

Applications for both programs must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Thursday, April 30, 2026. RTP motorized trail projects are accepted year-round and reviewed on a rolling basis.
