The Arkansas Department of Transportation is recognizing January as Human Trafficking Prevention Month with a comprehensive statewide campaign focused on education, awareness, and prevention.

Human trafficking occurs in every state, including Arkansas, and involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to exploit individuals for labor or commercial sex. Officials say victims are often found in plain sight at workplaces, rest areas, truck stops, and other public locations.

Director Jared Wiley said the department’s presence across the state gives employees a unique opportunity to recognize warning signs and report suspicious activity.

“At The Arkansas Department of Transportation, we think of ourselves as everyone’s neighbor. We have offices in every county and patrol every highway and interstate. We want to make sure our crews are educated and know how to spot human trafficking,” Wiley said.

As part of the 2026 initiative, the department has expanded training for all employees and developed informational posters and resource materials for display in public-facing facilities statewide.

Warning signs may include individuals who are not allowed to speak for themselves, appear fearful or controlled, or lack access to identification, money, or a phone.

Officials stress that while January is designated for awareness, efforts to combat human trafficking continue year-round.

Anyone who suspects trafficking is encouraged to contact the Arkansas Human Trafficking Hotline at 501-618-8001, email ReportHT@arkansas.gov
