Jonesboro Parks Director Danny Kapales has resigned from his position with the City of Jonesboro, effective 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, city officials confirmed.

Kapales had been on administrative leave since early December after the city disclosed that the U.S. Department of Justice had opened an investigation involving him. City officials confirmed on Tuesday, Dec. 2, that they were notified that morning of the federal investigation.
At the time, Mayor Harold Copenhaver said the city was fully cooperating and would continue to do so throughout the process. Following notification of the investigation, Kapales was immediately placed on administrative leave pending the outcome. Assistant Parks Director Jim Stearns was appointed acting parks director.
City officials said no additional information would be released due to the ongoing investigation and directed all inquiries to the Public Information Officer for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Little Rock field office. The FBI has confirmed only the existence of the investigation and court-authorized activity in Jonesboro.
On Sunday, Jan. 4, City Communications Director Donna Malone told NEA Report that Kapales had formally resigned effective Friday. Stearns will remain in the interim role while the city follows its standard hiring process. No further details were released.
