Harding University announced a strategic leadership restructuring Tuesday aimed at preserving continuity and long-term success for its nationally recognized football program.

Winningest coach by percentage in program history Paul Simmons will transition from head coach to the newly created role of General Manager of Harding Football, while longtime defensive coordinator Roddy Mote has been named the 14th head football coach in program history.
The move keeps intact the leadership responsible for the most successful era in Harding football. Under Simmons, the Bisons posted a 92–16 record, captured the 2023 NCAA Division II National Championship, made two national title game appearances, earned multiple National Coach of the Year honors, and won four Great American Conference championships.
As general manager, Simmons will focus on program sustainability, including fundraising, camps, and roster management, allowing the coaching staff to concentrate on on-field performance and recruiting. Harding Athletic Director Jeff Morgan praised Simmons’ continued commitment to the program, calling his leadership instrumental to its success.
Mote’s promotion provides a seamless transition following a 15–1 season and national runner-up finish. Since returning to Harding in 2016, Mote has built one of Division II’s top defenses, earning 2025 National Coordinator of the Year honors and helping lead the Bisons to consistent conference and national dominance.
Harding President Mike Williams said the transition reflects the university’s mission and confidence in its leadership, noting both Simmons and Mote exemplify Harding’s values on and off the field.
University officials say the restructuring positions Harding Football for sustained excellence while honoring the foundation built over the past decade. An announcement regarding the full 2026 coaching staff is expected at a later date.
