How Charles Schulz Insisted on Putting Jesus at the Center of A Charlie Brown Christmas
Charles Schulz never wavered from declaring the true meaning of Christmas: the birth of Jesus Christ. A devout Christian, Schulz insisted that A Charlie Brown Christmas include Scripture at its core—even when CBS executives hesitated. He told the network the special needed to be “about something,” and for Schulz, that meant restoring a Christ-centered foundation to the holiday.
To deliver that message, he required that Linus read Luke 2:10–14 on national television. Despite fears the passage was “too religious,” Schulz refused to compromise. Linus’s moment—dropping his security blanket while proclaiming “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy”—became the emotional and spiritual centerpiece of the special. For Schulz, Christmas commercialism missed the point; the nativity did not.
His stance forever shaped one of America’s most beloved holiday traditions.
Al Roker’s Reflections on Schulz’s Final Conversation
In what would become his final interview, Charles Schulz spoke with the late Al Roker while battling stage-four colon cancer. Roker asked if Schulz had a message for the millions who had read Peanuts for nearly 50 years. Schulz humbly replied, “It is amazing that they think that what I do was that good. I just did the best I could.”
Roker later said Schulz never understood how profoundly his work resonated. “He knew it was popular financially,” Roker recalled, “but he didn’t realize what it meant to people until he saw the outpouring after his diagnosis.”
President Donald Trump: “Religion Is Coming Back to the USA”
President Donald Trump has also emphasized restoring Christ to the center of Christmas celebrations, echoing the message Schulz championed decades earlier. During Christmas address, Trump highlighted the miracle of Bethlehem, the birth of Jesus Christ, and the importance of faith in American life. He thanked law enforcement, first responders, military members, and faith-based volunteers who serve others during the holidays, while also declaring that “religion is coming back to the USA.”
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders Issues Unapologetic Proclamation Centering Christmas on Christ
In a bold and unapologetic proclamation, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders reaffirmed the Christian foundation of Christmas while announcing that state offices will close on Friday, December 26, 2025, so employees may spend the holiday with family.
In her proclamation, Sanders declared:
“More than two millennia ago in the little town of Bethlehem… Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was born in a humble manger.”
“Jesus was the Messiah… who would be crucified, suffer for the sins of all mankind, die and rise again on the third day.”
“We give thanks for the arrival of Christ the Savior… by celebrating His birth each year on Christmas Day.”
Sanders officially proclaimed December 25, 2025, as “Christmas Day” in the State of Arkansas, directing that state offices—including the State Capitol—close on Friday, December 26 so employees may gather with loved ones in celebration of Christ’s birth.
Her proclamation concluded on December 16, 2025, under the Great Seal of the State of Arkansas.
