A Monday morning fire damaged three units of a five-unit apartment complex on Church Street in Lonoke, leaving multiple families temporarily without housing, according to local officials.

Lonoke Fire Chief Justin Whittenburg told ArkansasRadio.com that the blaze originated in one apartment before smoke and water spread through the connected building.

“The fire started in one apartment,” Whittenburg said. “The water damage, the smoke damage went through the building, but it has displaced three of the five apartments’ residents because of the smoke and water damage.”

Authorities believe the fire was cooking-related.

The displaced residents have been connected with the Red Cross for emergency assistance. The apartment manager is also working closely with community members to coordinate support for the affected families.

Donations are currently being collected to help the residents recover from the loss.

Officials continue to assess the structure for safety as cleanup and recovery efforts begin.
