The new program is expected to admit 120 students annually, starting in fall 2026, pending accreditation by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Lyon College is awaiting a comprehensive visit from the AVMA’s Council on Education (COE) after a site visit in November 2023.

“This is an exciting day for Cabot and the state of Arkansas,” said Cabot Mayor Ken Kincade. “This project will enhance education, animal healthcare, and public-private partnerships, benefiting both our community and the veterinary field.”

The Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine will combine academic training with hands-on animal care through the Cabot Animal Support Services center. Students will gain valuable real-world experience while providing essential services to the community.

Lyon College President Dr. Melissa Taverner expressed pride in the collaboration, stating, “This program will prepare students to meet critical needs in animal healthcare while advancing the veterinary profession.”

Mike Wheeler, director of animal services for Cabot, noted that the center will serve as a vital training hub for future veterinary professionals.

Dr. Eleanor Green, founding dean of the school, emphasized the program’s commitment to academic excellence and community engagement, while Cabot Director of Economic Development Alicia Payseno highlighted its potential to boost the city’s economy and healthcare infrastructure.
