New technology driven by artificial intelligence that will watch citizens.

Arkadelphia’s local government has introduced a new surveillance measure with the installation of “Flock Safety” camera system that will watch traffic along its main roads. The cameras will scan people’s license plates and use AI to track citizens.

The new cameras are designed to read license plates of passing vehicles, providing the Arkadelphia Police Department with real-time alerts when certain citizens drive by.

Police Chief Jason “Shorty” Jackson has clarified that these cameras are strictly for crime prevention and not for traffic enforcement, such as speeding. However, that doesn’t mean this won’t change in the future.

The funding for this initiative came from a grant provided by the Ross Foundation, aimed at enhancing community safety without infringing on daily traffic norms.

On August 20, 2024, the Arkadelphia Board of Directors approved a $30,750 grant for the installation and initial two-year service of the surveillance system.
