The Democratic National Convention is a significant event for the Democratic Party, attracting prominent figures from Arkansas across the political spectrum.
Among those in attendance is former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, who, despite being a Republican, is providing commentary for a news outlet at the convention. Hutchinson emphasized that while he remains a staunch conservative and a loyal member of the Republican Party, he is interested in the discussions happening at the convention.
Hutchinson acknowledged that while he sees validity in the Democrats’ comparison between Harris’ background as a prosecutor and former President Donald Trump’s status as a convicted felon, he remains undecided. He revealed that he plans to write in another Republican candidate on his ballot, although he didn’t specify who that would be.
He noted that while a write-in vote wouldn’t be counted in Arkansas, the act is symbolic—a way to express dissatisfaction with the current choices. Hutchinson has consistently argued that legal convictions should disqualify someone from becoming president.
“He’s a convicted felon, and while some Americans dismiss those convictions as politically motivated, the reality is that many are uncomfortable with the idea of a convicted felon in the White House,” Hutchinson said.
