Beware of text messages claiming to represent your bank.

A text message was received on Friday claiming to represent Arvest Bank. It said Arvest Bank shut down a card on file due to unauthorized activities. It was part of a dangerous scam meant to steal banking information from Arkansas residents.

Scammers Pretend To Be Arvest Bank

Scammers sent a text message with the following message:

“Arvest Notice: Dear client we have locked your Card due to some unauthorized activities.”

These types of scams usually involve tricking people to hand over sensitive banking information.

Phishing Scams Are Common

The federal trade commission (FTC) has a document you can read about how to avoid scams like these.

According to them, a phishing scam is “a type of online scam that targets consumers by sending them an e-mail that appears to be from a well-known source – an internet service provider, a bank, or a mortgage company, for example.”

Don’t fall for it. If you are asked to give sensitive information by anyone claiming to be a bank, always verify first. Call your bank directly before doing anything that might compromise you.
