One of the newest and fastest growing fishing clubs in Arkansas, the Greers Ferry Walleye Club (GFWC) is sponsoring a White Bass/Hybrid Striped Bass Fishing Tournament at Greers Ferry Lake on Saturday, September 21, 2024
This tournament is different than most fishing tournaments. Its purpose is to remove White Bass and Hybrids from the lake. Because of the large abundance of White Bass currently in Greers Ferry Lake, the White Bass and Hybrid Striped Bass are consuming too much of the Shad bait fish; let me explain a little further.
Shad are an important food source for all species of game fish such in Greers Ferry Lake such as Crappie, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, etc. As a result of the White Bass and Hybrid Striped Bass consuming large portions of shad in Greers Ferry Lake, many of the game fish other than White Bass and Hybrid Striped Bass are not getting the food (Shad) they need.
To manage this imbalance, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) Biologists stocked additional shad into Greers Ferry Lake each year; over the last few years 500,000 Threadfin Shad have been released into Greers Ferry annually. Compounding the problem over the last few years was cold winter temperatures that killed large quantities of Shad.
To further help balance the population of White Bass, AGFC regulations now allow an unlimited number of White Bass to be harvested by anglers daily. The daily limit for Hybrid Striped Bass is six per day. AGFC Biologists are working hard to obtain a balanced fishery at Greers Ferry Lake and this tournament will help us in achieving our goal.
The Greers Ferry Walleye Club encourages anglers throughout the community to help us by participating in this tournament. The cost of the Tournament is $75/Boat of two anglers. Cash prizes will be awarded. Go to the Greers Ferry Walleye Club’s website to sign up at:
