It’s official. Arkansas just set a new record!

According to Arkansas Online, Arkansas bear hunters killed a whopping 765 bears in 2023. That number is a shocking 100 more bears than the previously held record.

Bear Hunting History Made

At a presentation given by Myron Means at an Arkansas Game and Fish Commission meeting, Arkansas bear hunters topped the previous record for bears killed by a margin of 100 bears.

There were 765 bears killed during the 2023 hunting season. This means that only 665 bears were killed during a record year previously.

Allowing hunters more days to hunt likely contributed to the number.

“You see a lot more bears at bait stations before the acorns drop, then the bears will go to the woods and then start denning,” Means said. “Quite frankly, we’re getting bear harvest in the state about where we need bears to be harvested.”

A Big Number

It’s important to note that only around 400+ bears were killed in 2022. That means that there were over 300 more bears killed in 2023.

Special hunts are announced in zones dedicated to bear hunting. Some hunts lead to dozens of bears being killed in just one zone.

It’s important to note that bear hunting is needed. According to Bear Hunting Magazine, bear hunts remove 10% of bear populations each year, thereby reducing human/animal conflict. It’s a service to society.
