It’s snake season in Arkansas!

According to KATV, as snake season ramps up due to warm weather, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is warning citizens that it’s illegal to shoot a snake unless you are personally at risk. They also say that the best way to avoid conflict with a snake is to just walk away.

Crimes Against Snakes Exist

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission warned that’s actually a crime to harm snakes unless they are a threat to you, your pets, or your property.

Trey Reid, an official spokesperson for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, says that snakes are scared of humans. The best strategy to avoid danger is to ignore them and avoid them:

“As a human species we kind of have this fear of snakes but there is far more to be concerned about other critters that are coming out right now like ticks and mosquitoes that carry these vector-borne diseases like Zika and West Nile (viruses), Alpha-Gal and Lyme (disease) and things like that, that cause far more harm to humans every year than snake bites.”

Out of the 39 species of native snakes in Arkansas and only six of them are venomous.

That means if you see a snake, there’s only a 15% chance it can kill you. Which is either good news or bad news depending on how you view snakes — or death.
