A “bookmobile” project is gaining attention in Harding University’s local newspaper.

A “bookmobile” project was quietly launched in Bald Knob, Arkansas. The former Director of Federal and Special Programs at Bald Knob Lisa Moore launched the project to deliver books to children while everything was shut down during 2020. Now they’re trying to expand it with federal help.

Moore said she got the idea to launch the project after she saw one launched in Beebe, Arkansas. So she wanted to do that with one of the buses in Bald Knob!

Moore reportedly presented the idea to the board in Bald Knob School District. It was approved.

The bookmobile was funded by federal and state literacy money. A retired school bus was renovated for this purpose. Renovations included removing seats, adding flooring, building shelves, and covering windows with metal panels.

School librarians stocked the bus with hundreds of books.

Seeking Federal Help

Marcy Dugger, the current director of federal and special programs at Bald Knob, has since inherited the project. She wants to get the project federal funding.

Dugger recently attended a Federal Coordinators Conference. She’s bringing attention to the project trying to get more involvement.

According to Lisa Moore:

“We may not be a big school, but the things that we like to do are the things that kind of make us unique.”

You can view a photo of the bus project below posted on Bald Knob School District’s official website.

The bus is blue with a written message, saying:

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.”

It’s so wonderful seeing community projects like this. Especially when it helps children exercise their mind.
