The driver of the truck swerved to avoid a head-on collision with the car, causing the front tire to slip into a roadside ditch. In an attempt to regain control, the driver overcorrected, sending the vehicle spinning off the highway and crashing into a wooded area nearby.
Miraculously, both firefighters survived the wreck, though not without injuries. The passenger escaped with minor cuts and bruises, while the driver suffered more serious harm, requiring immediate surgery for a broken arm, wrist, and hand, and remains under medical care at Centerville General Hospital.
Fire Chief Nathaniel Ficklen spoke emotionally about the incident, asking the community to keep the department in their thoughts and prayers as they recover from losing two key members temporarily. He emphasized that these firefighters are invaluable to Centerville, and their absence will be felt, though no timeline for their return is certain.
Many locals have reached out, eager to assist the affected firefighters and their families during this challenging time. Chief Ficklen noted that donations for food and gas expenses can be sent via CashApp to $CentervilleFD1981, as the department awaits word on when the injured might be discharged.
Despite the setback, the Centerville Fire Department remains committed to protecting the community and will respond to emergencies as needed, even with reduced manpower. Chief Ficklen expressed deep appreciation for the outpouring of support from residents and neighboring agencies alike.
The chief extended a heartfelt thank-you to Pafford Emergency Medical Services, Survival Flight 18, Faulkner County Sheriff’s Office, Faulkner County OEM, Woolly Hollow State Park staff, and surrounding fire departments for their swift response to the crash. He also recognized the countless individuals who stopped to help, underscoring the strength of the Centerville community in times of crisis.
