How Earthquake Magnitudes Work
Earthquake magnitudes measure the size or energy released by an event; each whole number increase means the energy release is 32 times larger.
Typically, quakes below a magnitude of 3 are not felt by people, though seismographs can detect them. But sometimes people can feel them.
Recognizing seismic activity is crucial as it might signal emerging trends in geological behavior.
