Derek Tharp, a fifth-grade math teacher at Southside Middle School, was awarded the prestigious Milken Educator Award during a surprise assembly today. Tharp is the first from Southside School District to receive this honor.

Derek Tharp is a fifth grade math teacher. He works at Southside School District.
The award, presented by the Milken Family Foundation, comes with an unrestricted $25,000 check. Tharp’s recognition marks him as the 82nd Milken Educator in Arkansas. According to Milken Educator Awards:
“Tharp is the first-ever Milken Educator Award recipient in Batesville’s Southside School District and the 82nd recipient in Arkansas.”
Arkansas Department of Education Secretary Jacob Oliva joined the celebration, lauding Tharp’s dedication and impact on students.
Tharp’s work goes beyond math. He also aids in dyslexia screenings and serving as an RTI interventionalist.
Tharp’s approach includes data-driven strategies and high engagement techniques, leading to notable student achievements on various assessments. His leadership extends to mentoring new teachers and contributing to district-wide educational initiatives.
As part of the Milken Educator Network, Tharp will have access to mentorship, professional development, and opportunities to influence educational policy and practice nationwide.
