What Is An Interlock Device?
An interlock device for driving, commonly known as an Ignition Interlock Device (IID), is a small breathalyzer installed in a vehicle’s ignition system. It prevents the car from starting if the driver’s breath alcohol concentration exceeds a pre-set limit, typically around 0.02 BAC.
The device requires the driver to provide a breath sample before starting the vehicle, and at random intervals during operation to ensure sobriety.
These devices are often mandated for individuals convicted of driving under the influence as part of their legal penalties or license reinstatement conditions.
