Little Rock Orders Removal Of Chinese Surveillance Cameras Monitoring Citizens Across City

Little Rock was using surveillance technology owned by the Chinese government.

The Little Rock city board has approved the removal of surveillance cameras across the city created by a company called Hikvision. Hikvision is owned by the Chinese government and was recently placed on a blacklist by the United States Government.

Little Rock Removes Chinese Surveillance Equipment Monitoring Citizens

In 2022, the Federal Communications Commission prohibited the sale or importation of equipment from Hikvision and various other Chinese companies, such as Huawei, citing national security risks.

Early reports confirm that a whopping 319 Hikvision cameras were installed across different facilities in Little Rock monitoring citizens.

In December 2023, the city board finally began the process to remove these cameras.

This week, an ordinance was passed to replace all remaining Hikvision cameras in the city. The total cost for this replacement is approximately $2.1 million.

This is a responsible decision by the Little Rock city council to improve the safety of the city.

Little Rock doesn’t have a city council, it has a city board. Totally different form of government than a city council under Arkansas law.
