Fairfield Bay Police Chief Warns Residents Of Future Gunfire At Armadillos By Businesses

Some residents in Fairfield Bay were reportedly concerned about gunfire heard in Fairfield Bay around the Mountain Ranch area.

At the Fairfield Bay City Council meeting, Police Chief Jackie McCool put those concerns to rest. Don’t be concerned. It’s just local businesses killing armadillos that are destroying property.

Armadillos Leads To Gunfire In The Area

It all started when McCool was giving a presentation at the Fairfield Bay City Council last night. He was asked:

“Do you have any idea what the gunfire is in the Mountain Ranch area?”

He explained the situation with armadillos in the area:

“Probably the golf course killing armadillos… that time of year they’re destroying courses everywhere. Probably Indian Hills as well… But that’s what that is.”

McCool explained that situations can lead to confusion unless the Police Department is notified ahead of time by residents preparing to discharge their firearms in city limits:

“We did have a gentleman on that street that shot a snake in his yard one year and we got called out there. We were approaching the residence in full armor and gear… It was a gunfire and a lady screamed…. it turns out they had a copperhead in the yard.”

Rules For Killing Armadillos

According to the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture, Arkansas residents can shoot armadillos if they are destroying property.

However, shots must be fired in the daytime. Otherwise, a permit is needed with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Please be sure to contact your local police department as a courtesy before discharging weapons.
