A harmful algal bloom has been reported in one of Arkansas’ big lakes.
The Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment’s Division of Environmental Quality has issued an advisory for Lake Hogue in Poinsett County due to a harmful algal bloom. This bloom, confirmed by visual sightings and preliminary tests, contains cyanobacteria that can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals.
What To Know About The Bacteria
Health risks associated with the bloom include headaches, weakness, and gastrointestinal issues, with children, pets, and livestock being particularly vulnerable. Authorities recommend avoiding contact with the water and washing off any exposed individuals or animals with clean tap water.
The DEQ is actively monitoring Lake Hogue’s water quality and will update the public when the advisory can be lifted. Until then, recreational activities that involve direct contact with the water should be avoided to prevent health risks.
For those who suspect they’ve encountered a harmful algal bloom elsewhere, reporting to DEQ via email or phone is encouraged, with further details available on the DEQ’s website.
