Arkansas’ water system is at risk.

According to KARK, U.S. Congressman Rick Crawford unveiled a law to protect Arkansas’ water system from cyberattacks from hackers. The new legislation comes as water systems have been targeted by hackers trying to increase chemical levels in water.

In 2021, a Florida water treatment plant was targeted by a hacker. The suspect allegedly increased the chemicals going into the water to unsafe levels.

Crawford’s legislation is meant to “establish a Water Risk and Resilience Organization to develop risk and resilience requirements for the water sector.”

Crawford shared a statement with his announcement of the WRRO Establishment Act:

“Foreign adversaries such as Russia and China have utilized cyber-attacks to target critical infrastructure such as water systems. This bill is a more proactive approach to safeguarding our drinking and wastewater from these types of attacks. These protections are vital at a time where cyber threats are constant and technology is evolving quickly.”
